“Your father is the American Chaplin.”
-- Groucho Marx (speaking to Gary Hall)
“Huntz Hall was a complicated person extremely generous and loving on the one hand, scarily angry and violent on the other. I think the hardest thing for me was the absolute disappearance from my life of a father beginning in the 6th grade and lasting until I got out of high school…I have a priest friend who says you can’t really grow up until you forgive your parents. As I get older I understand my father much better – he was emotionally deprived as a kid, and then he was unprepared for fame and money when they arrived in his teenage years. So he didn’t have the skills to be a parent. He did the best he could with the emotional equipment he had.”
-- Rev. Gary Hall (Huntz Hall’s son)
Behind Sach The Huntz Hall Story presents the life of the actor who made us laugh with his unforgettable and unique persona of Horace DeBussy Jones, better known simply as “Sach.” This is the story of Huntz Hall, who played the zany character in forty-eight Bowery Boys films from the 1946 thru 1958. Someday Hall will be lauded as surely a comic genius as Chaplin. This biography is based upon never before revealed information provided by his only son. It offers a respectful portrait and appreciation of Hall's personal life and an examination of the comedy moments of his beloved Sach.
Jim Manago has authored Love is the Reason for it All The Shirley Booth Story (BearManor Media, 2008) and For Bill His Pinup Girl The Shirley Booth and Bill Baker Story (Jim and Donna Manago Books, 2010). He holds a Master’s degree in Cinema Studies from The College of Staten Island/City University of New York.

I could not put this book down!Being a lifelong fan and having grown up with the antics of the Bowery Boys at the Saturday neighborhood matinees, this book brought back such memories of Sach, the goofy sidekick of Slip Mahoney, the former being played by Huntz Hall. Huntz was quite a prolific actor, able to play comedic roles not only as Sach but as everyday people, along with dramatic roles as he played in the episodes of "Flipper." Reading about Huntz' life told me the story of a man whose aspirations never stopped at being typecast, his person being of one who never allowed ANYONE to walk over him, yet a soft heart for children and those who were less fortunate. His son Gary assisted the author with the writing so there are no rumors, no falsehoods and no fabricated nonsense that is found in many biographies of celebrities. Huntz was also known as a ladies' man or, as his son put it, "thought he was God's gift to women..." (!) Wha.....? I knew that his co-star, Leo Gorcey, had issues with women and alcohol but I did not know that Huntz did as well. Whatever. Still, he will always be my favorite of the Bowery Boys characters, as well as a fine, talented actor with a lot of heart!

Behind Sach The Huntz Hall Story eBook Jim Manago Reviews
I haven't read it yet (which is a bad beginning for any review), but I was first struck after having received the book was how little of it is "The Huntz Hall Story." Out of the 350 pages, around 20% is and actual bio, 50% is synopses of his films and 30% is listing all the credits of his films. Would have been MUCH better book if they just took the bio and filled up the other 300 pages with great graphics photos and film posters
The only image in this book is the cover.
And my 2-star rating is if the bio section is good.
Very in depth, loved it!!!
It was ok. It was not nearly as good as Leo Gorcey Jr.'s book. This was written by a professional writer who was an outsider.
It was more a collection of historical facts about his life and then half the book was just a collection of summaries of his movies.
It would have been grat to have gotten more insight into the life of one of Hollywoods's most iconic and under-appreciated comic actors.
I enjoyed reading this biography despite the price. There is more information about Huntz Hall contained in this one book than anywhere else.
(I believe that it's the ONLY biography about Hall that has been published in book form.)
Great read, well written. Nice to see a book that recognizes the talent of Huntz Hall. Jim Manago obviously has a passion for his topic. Money well spent!
A nice long form article that was turned into a book by virtue of the reviews of each movie. That's fine, but I would have liked to see and hear a bit more about the man, ostensibly from his family and those who worked with him. Still, a nice book and there are some good photos. Hall's comedic and acting abilities deserve our attention.
No informative information here. The "Huntz Hall Story" is 98 pages. The reaming 300 or so pages is the authors opinion of the films. This is not the story of Huntz, it's an article of his life with absolutely no information on the man whatsoever. The section on the films has no information on production costs, or profits, etc. No "inside" look into Monogram or Allied Artists. Mr. Manago has not researched the films or their production. Furthermore the author's "Sach Comedy Meter" is worthless. I was hoping for an in-depth look into the man, especially since his son contributed information. What we have here is 98 pages of rambling info of no importance, and 300 pages of nonsense. Hopefully, someday a meaningful biography of Hall will surface to truly give this comic genius his due. I returned my copy.
