This book will be attacked, vilified, SHUNNED!
Are you confused with your dog’s behavior? Do you feel like giving up? Confused because you don’t know how to stop your dog from jumping, barking, stealing food off the counters, biting and nipping, and other behaviors? The reason you're confused is simple. There are legions of dog trainers telling dog owners they can NEVER SAY NO! This is deadly advice for your dog.
Your dog has to learn two important words YES and NO. Dog training is a combination of YES and NO. YES for good behavior and NO for unwanted behaviors. If you never teach your dog NO, your dog is in danger. A dog that continues to jump, bark, steal, bite, and pull on leash will have a good chance of going to a shelter. Shelters and rescues across the country are filled with dogs because of one main reason Behavior problems!
The best way to END a behavior problem is by teaching and using the word NO. The sentence you just read is why this book will be attacked. If you speak out against the “Positive Only” training culture, you are attacked and labeled unscientific, abusive, mean, and uneducated. But I’m willing to take the slings and arrows for you and stand up to The Church of Positive Only Training. Someone needs to set the record straight and help you with your dog.
I wrote this book to help dog owners who feel like giving up. If you ever felt like giving up, it is NOT your fault. There has been a campaign for the past two decades giving dog owners incorrect information on how to stop unwanted behaviors. The Deadly Dog Training Myth will explain how dog training has evolved into an “ALL POSITIVE” ideology and how it has affected dogs. This book will also show you how to END annoying behavior problems and much more. If you’re struggling with your dog and unwanted behaviors, learn how to teach your dog NO with this book. You’ll also learn how to teach YES using positive reinforcement to increase behaviors you like and want; behaviors like come, heel, stay and more.

This book was much more the philosophy of training than actual training techniques. By the end of the first chapter, I understood that it is necessary to discipline (negative consequence) to STOP a negative behavior. I didn't need five more chapters reiterating the same theme. I gave the book four stars because I did pick up some valuable ideas especially in chapter 9 concerning play. Letendre does give a few specific ways to play productively and does explain dog behavior in relation to what we humans do. I would like to buy another book of his because I really think he knows what he is talking about, and nowhere does he suggest harming a dog, but I can't take anymore explanation of his philosophy. The Deadly Dog Training Myth Why the EXPERTS make it IMPOSSIBLE to train your dog And what YOU can do about it edition by Eric Letendre Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
This is an excellent book to help you train your dog. Any dog owner would find it helpful, as Eric addresses situations and problems that would be relevant to owners of puppies, such as housebreaking or crate training, as well as difficulties such as aggression, excessive barking, or not coming when called that might be problems for owners of older dogs. In the first part of the book, Eric carefully explains why using only positive rewards is not the best way to teach desired behaviors or to stop unwanted or dangerous behaviors. He then shows how a regime of positive rewards paired with negative consequences is the most effective and, indeed, the most humane way to train your dog.
I found this book and Eric Letendre’s step-by-step training advice to be invaluable as I worked with my new puppy. At the end of the book, Eric also includes a list of additional resources such as websites and online videos for further help.
Great book written in an easy to follow manner. It breaks down what is wrong in dog training today. It explains simple concepts to training your dog. If you are aspiring to be a trainer this is a valuable read.
Contrary to expectations, and I know Eric Letendre quite a long time ago the book made a strange impression - many words, about what is wrong and one shouldn't do and how some bad trainers give bad suggestions and very few details about how it should really be. Purely commercial with the expectation of membership in his club and promises. The book is quite suitable only for very young beginning owners of dogs.
Excellent book on dog training and behavior! I have a leash reactive dog that I have been working with and this book has been extremely helpful and informative for me, I recommend it to anyone with behavior problems or anyone who is just starting to train a new puppy. Eric has a wealth of knowledge about dogs, an intuitive understanding of their behavior, and a down to earth common sense approach to training. Most of all I loved the simple philosophy and methodology positive reinforcement when you want the dog to learn something BUT negative correction when you don't want the dog to do something. It makes so much more sense to me than the complicated positive reinforcement ONLY methods that I keep coming across! that haven't worked for my dog. Thank you Eric Letendre for this helpful, much needed book!
I agree with many of this author's points on why "The Church of Positive Only" is dangerous. However, the bashing against them gets repetitive and annoying as it drags out for roughly 90% of this book. You then get very little demonstration of why his own methods are healthier.
The best advice I've heard about dog training is to objectively study everyone currently out there, creatively experiment, and develop individual programs that match the individual dog. This is why I stuck through this book till the end there are tidbits of useful information as other reviewers state. But it likely could've been conveyed more succinctly and without alienating those whose dangerous beliefs about dog training are your potential target audience.
I bought the book after listening to Mr Letendre on a podcast discussing the book and his philosophy of dog training and wanting to learn more about a balanced approach to training. This review is NOT a commentary on the author's training philosophy, but rather on the quality of content. While there are snippets of good theory and practical hints sprinkled throughout the book, much of the book is about (a) how wrong the positive reinforcement trainers are (...and he calls many of them out by name), (b) how good he is, and (c) how he is victimized by the "church" (his term) of positive reinforcement for holding his views. The book would be much more helpful if it clearly laid out the philosophical underpinnings of his approach, and then how he applies it in training.
I'm pretty sure, based on the podcast discussion, that he did not intend the main message of his book to come across as the defense of punishment, but unfortunately it does.
This book has many interesting theories that I have actually included in the training of my own dog...I firmly believe that the school of positive only reinforcement is a joke as well. I concur with the author that there is a fine line between negative reinforcement and, physically beating an animal which is totally unacceptable. As it was pointed out, a well balanced training regiment is what will work for most dogs. I would highly reccomend this to people unfamiliar with dog training techniques...it will be very helpful by leading you in the right direction when it comes to training Fido. ;)
